This page is specifically dedicated to you! We know there are plenty of questions you have about a sorority. We do not blame you! There are many stereotypes about how 'sorority girls' are. We are here to let you know that those stereotypes are not true! Here are some questions and concerns parents have about their daughters joining a sorority.

Q. Hazing has become a huge epidemic in the past few years. There are plenty of stories about new members getting hazed to become a part of a sisterhood. Is hazing involved in your organization?

A: Absolutely not! There is absolutely NO hazing in our organization. Hazing is not only forbidden in our national organization, but it is also forbidden at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. There are serious consequences to hazing. Our constitution strictly forbids sisters from hazing potential new members.

Q. I am worried if my child gets involved with Greek life that they will start consuming alcohol, drugs etc. under peer pressure.

A: We believe in personal choice. We have many sisters at our school and across the nation that do not participate in these activities. No sister is allowed to force anything upon a new member. Serious consequences will follow if any act of peer pressure from a sister to a new member is done.

Q. Will my child’s grades drop if they participate in this New Member Education Program? How can they balance school and the sorority?

A: Grades drop when schoolwork is not completed fully or in time. New member education process may take a good amount of time away from your normal life style. Effective time management is very important in this situation. New member education program mandates study hours for every potential new member without an exception. Most universities and colleges encourage this and often require this to be part of the new member education program. After all, we are enrolled in college for our future career.

Q. What exactly is the New Member Education Program and how long will it take?

A: More than anything else, the new member education program is a learning period. During this period a potential new member gets educated about the values and ideals of Sigma Sigma Rho and its history and traditions. Most importantly during this period all potential new members get acquainted with the sisters of the sorority and vice versa. A new member educator is assigned to each new member class in order to lead them through this learning process. There is no pre-determined time period for the successful completion of the new member education program.

Q. Once becoming a sister there are fees to pay to be an active member. What if my child is struggling to pay these fees?

A: We have a very understanding group of sisters that help each other when it comes to financial issues. We know with this economy and being a college student that one must really budget. We have payment plans to help these sisters break down how much they owe in a certain time period. This will help these ladies manage their money. We also host fundraisers for sisters who need help getting the money. Our dues and payments for materials are very reasonable though. We are always there to give a helping hand to a sister who is in need of assistance.

Q. What will my child gain from joining from your sorority?

A: Sigma Sigma Rho stands for sisterhood, society and remembrance. We believe that every girl deserves to have strong women by her side to help through thick and thin. We are a sisterhood. We give each other support when it is needed and to have a lasting bond. We as a whole give back to our community. Our philanthropy is Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention. We believe in the importance of working together with other organizations that strive for similar beliefs, giving our skills and time to fellow citizens in need. Remembrance of who we are and never forgetting that internal voice. Remembrance of what ancestors and women of our kind have been through and carrying out the voices of those individuals in the society we live in. We also build connections and network to help build our future careers. Our alumnae give guidance to the undergraduate sisters. we also help find scholarships and give out scholarships to those sisters whom have earned it.
